Remember this day? Remember the glory? Remember the agony? 45 minutes of pure pain. 75 minutes of pure exhilaration.
but did you notice, the win was a comeback AFTER 21 years of getting banned in the competition? We won four in the span of 8 years: 1977, 1978, 1981, 1984. If we were not banned, I think we would have reached Madrid's superb count of 9; or even, we could have won more than them. Because even before Madrid won one Champions League trophy, we had already won 4. So then, we had to painstakingly wait 21 years to win our fifth. It was already written that Steven Gerrard would lift the fifth, after 21 years of ban. It was our mark to the world, to inform the world that we are back, and we are serious. Also to thank Rafael Benitez for that night, not forget Jerzy Dudek and the team of 2005. The miracle in Istanbul is not just a miracle, it was fate.
I was not born with all the glory of watching Liverpool winning the BPL (formerly EPL), in the year 1991. I was born a year after we won our 18th title, none after that. I think I only heard of Liverpool then, in 2001. When I was 10, in the year 2001, the year where all my mischief started but that will be another story. The year I fell in love with The Kop, was the year we won the treble with Gerard Houlier, with our captain Sami Hyppia. I know it is kind of lame, to support the winning team. But hey, they did not win the Premier League but still I feel in love with them. I supported Arsenal when I was younger, influenced by my second brother; but I only liked Arsenal also because of two players: Emmanuel Petit and David Seaman. Other than that, there was no love for Arsenal as a team. I was very young, so I did not know a thing. Every has got to love their team somewhere, and what was the cause. At that point of time too, I did not know my family consists of Liverpool fans. Like the whole big family, Liverpool fans. Of course a few of team Manchester United fans. Then I was lucky enough, to watch us capture the eyes of the world, to capture our fifth European title. A feat no other English team has done.It was magical, I remember going to school bragging about it. I felt proud, like I was on top of the world. I guess every Kopite would feel that way too?
21 years of ban lifted = Champions League Glory. 20 years of BPL no-show = criticisms.
But hey, don't you put us down yet. You can never put us away just yet, look at the statistics in 06-07. We lost 10 games and drew 8 games, we finished third; ahead of Arsenal. In 07-08, we lost 4 and drew 13, we finished fourth. Then in 08-09, we lost 2 drew 11, we finished second; gave Manchester United a push like no push. This year, its not even reach half way point, we already lost 5 and drew 3. Looking at the statistics year by year, I don't think we are out of the title race yet. Even though we are 13 points away from Chelsea, and this year we have Manchester City on the run for top four too. I doubt the other teams will keep on winning and winning, they will draw some and lose some in the times to come. We too will lose some and draw some, agree? Chelsea lost 2-1 to Manchester City and also drew last night to Everton. Manchester United lost to Aston Villa 1-0 last night, so no team in the BPL will keep winning and winning. Not unless it was Arsenal 03-04 team, they lost no games in the whole season; which was superb really. I was humbled to see such a feat done. And maybe also Chelsea 04-05 team, where they lost only 1 game. As you can see, this is the world of soccer, no team will ever stay consistent. Because why, we are ALL humans; we make mistakes.
We are not in a crisis yet, the only crisis we have is those Yanks taking away ALL our funds. And I know every Kopite wants them out now, and please send some rich Arab to take over us. Either we win lose or draw tonight, we are still in the title race; it won't be over till its May. I am certain, we will still be in the top four. Our players are coming back, the other teams are starting to face our injury problems. They have started their season at the start, we just wanted to start abit later. Don't you lose hope now, keep the faith. Maybe we won't win the BPL this year, but maybe the next.
21 years of ban lifted = Champions League Glory. 21 years of BPL no-show = 19th BPL title? who knows yeah?
So rally with me Kopites, let us walk through this storm. So rally with me Kopites, we will hold our heads up high. So rally with me Kopites, we won't be tattered by this dark cloud. So rally with me Kopites, let our dreams be tossed and blown. So rally with me Kopites, let us walk on together. So rally with me Kopites, with hopes in our hearts. For we have each other, we won't be walking alone. For we have each other, to see that golden sky. For we have each other, we are Liverpool.
My brothers and sisters of Liverpool FC. We are Kopites, we are the 12th persons. We are, hands down, the best fans in the world. Because of people like you and me, we are KOPITES.
And we will stand by Rafael Benitez. And we will stand by Steven Gerrard. And we will stand by our history. THIS IS ANFIELD. THIS OUR. HOME!
